Random Picture Entry: Mickey Rourke, Who Turns 59 Today

If you want to fall in love tonight, just stay home and watch Rumble Fish or Diner on Netflix.

For this entry I have selected only photos of Mickey with dogs and cigarettes, which I think he’d be into.

Heavy Rotation: David Bowie’s Cover of “It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City” by Bruce Springsteen

On Wednesday morning I was granted the opportunity to have a message delivered from me to Mickey Rourke, which is something I’m not going to elaborate on here. I tried to come up with something clever but in the end I went with: “Tell Mickey I just saw Homeboy and I loved it and I love him.” It was a good choice. And last night I was listening to all the Bruce Springsteen songs on my iPod and I realized another good choice would have been: “Tell Mickey if he were a song, he’d totally be ‘It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City’ by Bruce Springsteen.” It’s so true! And I listened to “It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City” like five times in a row, and then I listened to David Bowie’s version, which is lustrous and elegant, as David Bowie songs are wont to be. But it’s not about Mickey Rourke. Only Bruce’s is for Mickey:

P.S. I LOVE YOUR HAT, BRUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Listening: Right now I just like Tombs, and sometimes Rihanna because it’s summer and she’s kind of perfect for that
Watching: 8 Mile (Can someone explain to me the Brittany Murphy character? Is she supposed to be high all the time or am I missing something? At the same time, man, I miss her); “Twin Peaks”; White Material (oh I love Claire Denis, and Isabelle Huppert!)
Reading: Emile Zola’s Therese Raquin, which has some truly, deeply crazy characters running around in it. Also: my novel, aaargh!
Wearing: A floral sundress ’cause it’s hot…
Wanting: More hours in the day!!! Or less to do during the day! Wah!

I think Rihanna looks super-cute at the beginning of the “Man Down” video, with her braid and her super-cute dresses. Although why is everyone dogging on this video? People say it’s so violent that she shoots her rapist, but dude, whatever…men get all violent in videos and movies all the time and no one bats an eyelash, but the minute a girl gets a gun and it’s all CONTROVERSIAL. (Also: the cinematography is so rad.)

Listening: “6′ 7′” by Lil Wayne, Helium demos I’ll tell you about later, the song where Tom Petty sings “We smoked cigarettes and we stared at the moon/And I’d show you stars you never could see/It couldn’t've been that easy to forget about me.”
Watching: The Wrestler
Reading: Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Christopher Walken interviewing Mickey Rourke in 2009:

MICKEY ROURKE: There was something about outer space with you. You and I had dinner one night at the Outlaw Inn in Kalispell, Montana, and you said to me, “What do you think happened to all the dinosaurs?” I said, “I don’t know.” And you said, “I think they grew wings and flew away to another planet.” I always remind you of that, and you never fess up to it–that that’s the conversation we had.

CHRISTOPHER WALKEN: But you did remind me of it. There is a scene like that in Homeboy.

MICKEY ROURKE: That’s why I wrote it. Because I thought, “Wow, here I’m having this one chance to have dinner with one of my favorite actors in the world, and he’s talking about dinosaurs in outer space.”

Wearing: dinosaurs in outer space

Here is a pile of things on the sidewalk up the street from my house. I took the Lou Reed and the magazine, which is an issue of Life from 1940:

Listening: Fredrik, Flora (wonderful Swedish band that I discovered during my Spiritually Scandinavian phase, bits of this record sound like Bauhaus but pretty); I am also making a mix and it is called “SPROCKETS.” Lately I am fond of old Motley Crue singles as well.
Watching: I watched Atonement: visually beautiful, dramatically inert. But those costumes are to die for.
Reading: I am looking forward to being done with this draft of ze novel, so I can read other things soon.
Wearing: It got chilly again, so I got to wear my Acne sweater one more time, with jeans and Converse and my new glasses that I am in love with.
Wanting: My abiding want is to write stories and lovely things full-time, all the time. But I’m pretty cool.

Here’s Fredrik’s video for “Chrome Cavities.” It’s super-lovely, especially if you are down with Stan Brakhage. The whole record is super-great!

Listening: I made myself a mix CD that’s basically just the best songs on Exile on Main St. & “Strange Loop” by Liz Phair & some mid-career Bruce Springsteen stuff & “Listen To What The Man Said” by Wings.
Watching: movies with Mickey Rourke in them, especially Homeboy
Reading: this really beautiful article about Homeboy, written by and starring Mickey Rourke
Wearing: something to do with Mickey Rourke. Just kidding: jeans & a t-shirt & my hooded black leather jacket.
Wanting: I’m getting to the point of thinking it’s cool how Mickey Rourke destroyed his own beauty. You know?

Here is a nicely crushed pack of cigarettes lying dead in the middle of my street:

P.S. This makes me homesick:

I Think That I Shall Never See/A Poem Lovely As Mickey Rourke Lip-Synching “Feel Like a Number” by Bob Seger in That One Scene from Body Heat

It’s actually kind awkward, but I love it. And the other morning when I was half-awake I had this brilliant idea that I should get a job rewriting any existing Mickey Rourke biographies so that the language within matches the beauty of the man himself. So if you know of any jobs like that, totally get in touch.

Also, look at him on Letterman with his weird little sweater-wearing dog. All I want is to save him from Dave shouting in his face over and over like some big annoying shouty person. (FYI: the volume on this video’s mega-high. Turn it down!)

Dream Dude: Mickey Rourke in Rumble Fish

So soft-spoken, so handsomely pockmarked. This is the weirdest movie I’ve seen in a really long time, and I watched it twice last week. In my dream life, there’s no bonkers Stewart Copeland score and instead “Lost in the Flood” by Bruce Springsteen just plays throughout almost every scene. But it’s still a movie you should watch (instantly, on Netflix, now!), mostly because it’s so beautifully photographed. See?

Matt Dillon as Rusty James is my dream dude too. Diane Lane and Baby Sofia Coppola love to kiss him:

Listening: Most of my listening comes from playing Dance Central these days. I’m uncomfortably familiar with the words to “Evacuate the Dancefloor” now.
Watching: I have kind of a weird crush on Oblio, a Dance Central avatar with anime-like blue hair and grey skinny jeans. It’s really awesome when he does the “Satisfaction” dance at the hard level. Wait, did I just say that?
Reading: Jay-Z’s Decoded is really fucking great.
Wearing: I’m really into this pair of Levis now with a big sweater I got from Iceland. TEN DEGREES BELOW ZERO, BABY.
Wanting: I’m going to fucking nail the “Just Dance” routine at the highest level this weekend, even if it kills me.

Coming out of that spin into that freaking “record player”/”boost” move kills me, I hate it so much:

Listening: Check Your Head by the Beastie Boys is a very inspiring album, especially “Pass the Mic”
Watching: Maybe someday I’ll make it through all of Diner without falling asleep? BUT ARRRRGGHHH MICKEY ROURKE
Reading: Flea’s Twitter is a very inspiring Twitter, especially his dog
Wearing: yo this 80-degree weather is really messing with my wear-the-Bells-Beach-beanie-and-fake-leopard-coat-and-Frye-boots-every-day-till-like-March idea hahahahahahahaha
Wanting: please no more insomnia plz plz plz

+ Laura Jane

Listening: Exile on Main St
Watching: Stones in Exile
Reading: I finished Keith, sadface
Wearing: Knee-high lace-up Frye boots, paisley stockings, Eiffel tower-print skirt, ratty grey t-shirt, cheetah charm necklace, leopard-print cardigan, red plaid scarf, faux-fur bomber, bangles.
Wanting: Money, summer, Keith
