Listening: The new Strokes record; old Pixies records. I prefer the Pixies.
Watching: FOX RENEWED “FRINGE”! So I am watching that tonight.
Reading: I started Blake Nelson’s Recovery Road and I LIKE IT A LOT.
Wearing: I am still in my PJs; I’ve been up since 5:30AM.
Wanting: I want you to read my new short story! It is like a slight satire on “Sex and the City”-style chick lit, but someone so eternal that it borders on cliche wandered into it. According to Figment, it should take approximately 13 minutes to read. Below would be the cover image, if it was a book:

Listening: All I do is listen to “How You Like Me Now?” by the Heavy and pretend I’m walkin’ all around town with my big brother Christian Bale in the midst of a gloriously sunny Massachusetts morn.
Watching: Friends With Money; I’m on a Nicole Holofcener kick. Jennifer Aniston’s delivery of the line “I love Old Navy!” is probably my favorite moment in all of cinematic history.
Reading: rereading Cavedweller by Dorothy Allison
Wearing: black jeans + white tshirt + faux leopard fur coat + black Frye boots + BIG HAIR
Wanting: I’m going to see Dom tomorrow and I want you to come see them too!

Drag about Mad Men, huh?

+ Laura Jane

Listening: All night every night I stay up all night working and listening to Space Oddity by David Bowie over and over again. Sometimes also Village Green, and the Wu-Tang/Beatles mash-up, which truly is a gift from God
Watching: God that bitch named Alexandria from Top Model truly is a giant bitch, isn’t she?
Reading:
Wearing: Last night I realized my Midnight Marauders t-shirt is glow-in-the-dark! So next time I am sad or grumpy or having an emotional breakdown, just remind me that I own a glow-in-the-dark Midnight Marauders t-shirt, and maybe I will care. It’s hard not to typo “Marauders” as “Mauraders,” which I think is a side effect of having the name “Laura”
Wanting: Jersey Shore & daylong nap

In the future, when people ask me what’s my favourite David Bowie song, I’ll tell them “Cygnet Committee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Listening: I have just finally accepted that Depeche Mode is really my all-time favorite band. To celebrate, I listened to a lot of Black Celebration.
Watching: I finally watched (500) Days of Summer. It was cute. I realized I find Joseph Gordon Levitt’s improbably deep voice very attractive, but the film’s inability to delve very deeply into Zooey Deschanel’s character’s inner life is a real problem. I actually discussed this with one of my most astute film friends, who pointed out that it reflects the main character’s experience in the relationship, but who says a film has to be limited to the perceptions of the main character? Isn’t that the point of film and books and stuff like that: to be able to be in anyone’s head? Also, I watched “Nikita” last night and after last night’s ep, I really think Lyndsy Fonseca would make a great Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games movie they’re going to shoot this year. And I’m going to watch “Fringe” tonight.
Reading: The Stand by Stephen King. Wow, he writes A LOT. I also read Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, which is a YA werewolf book. It’s really beautifully written, and I’m also extremely relieved that it is nothing like my own book. What a bummer that would be, right?!!
Wearing: I actually am wearing a dress! By United Bamboo! My favorite convent-type dress, with tights!
Wanting: To see Liz DJ at Barcade! Where is my fucking private plane?! Also, I can’t wait to be done with the first revision of my novel. IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN THIS WEEKEND.

+ Liz

Listening: my playlist for the metaphysical mixtape I’m playing tomorrow night at Barcade
Watching: I LOL-ed a lot at Josh Groban Sings Kanye West Tweets. I also watch Jersey Shore.
Reading: The New Yorker and New York and books and stuff
Wearing: my high school track shorts and a t-shirt and furry slippers
Wanting: All I want is for you to come to Barcade tomorrow. OK?

HERE’S A LI’L SNEAK PEEK AT WHAT I’LL BE PLAYING TOMORROW:

Listening: The deluxe version of my 8tracks.com “I Fell in Love with a Werewolf Skater in 1988″ mix. It has way more hardcore on it. If you’re on 8tracks.com, tell me your mix and I will listen to it. It is my new favorite site. I listened to all my music this week via 8tracks.com.
Watching: A very, very special elf sent me a package of screeners which made me feel so lucky. So I got to see Black Swan, Rabbit Hole, The Fighter, and True Grit. Black Swan is genuine bananas and the sexual politics of it bothered me in a way that I longed to see a female director’s take on the story. (Patriarchal virgin/whore bullshit, can we just get over this?) But I did enjoy being freaked out so much — and I do so like creepy movies and I’m always pleased to see Noni. It meant to work on a visceral level and that’s what it did, and I think it is one of the few memorable movies of this year, strange and pulpy and kind of camp and faux-psychotic and then really awesomely psychotic — the last 40 minutes of the movie still kind of play in my mind. Rabbit Hole was moving in a very small, intimate, human way and Nicole Kidman was fantastic. I really hope Nicolekins gets an Oscar. It would be well-deserved. True Grit was not that interesting to me; I confess that I turned it off and watched something else, probably “The Wizards of Waverly Place” or whatever my niece wanted to see. But I really only enjoy the Coen brothers’ comedies whole-heartedly, though they get amazing performances in their dramatic films. If The Fighter did not have Christian Bale and Amy Adams, I would’ve totally not made it a priority to see, either. It’s well-done and solid as a film on the whole, but the thing that makes the movie memorable is Christian Bale. Christian Bale is SO GOOD. SO FUCKING GOOD. He’s always good, but he’s FUCKING GOOD in The Fighter. If anyone’s just a fan of good actors and performances, you really need to see it for what he does. Oh, I also took my nephew to see the latest Narnia movie and I enjoyed it. I actually think it’s my favorite of all the Narnia film adaptations — it’s very ably directed, generally well-paced and there are some truly magical moments. It’s a shame that there probably won’t be more Narnia films, because I felt like they had found their footing in this one. Also, the kid who plays Eustace Scrubb is a comic genius. I totally didn’t realize he was in Son of Rambow, but he was, and he’s excellent in Voyage of the Dawn Treader. He really went for it. Love that in an actor, however young. Most young or child actors try so hard to please or be cute in their performances (see “Wizards of Waverly Place”) that it’s kind of cool to see something so ballsy-annoying and alienating. And funny, in that stuffy British way.
Reading: Every holiday season, I like to read all the books I loved as a kid. So I’m reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy for about the millionth time of my life, proving once again that at heart I am basically a nine-year old boy or something. I’m sure I’ll re-watch all the movies, too. It makes me sad during the holidays that there isn’t a new LOTR movie to look forward to, so I was most psyched to hear they’re finally moving forward on The Hobbit movie.
Wearing: Plaid flannel layered over thermal, Uniqlo leggings (sob, I miss Uniqlo) over more leggings, knee high socks, Frye boots, a knit hat, my favorite big giant neck muffler thingie. It’s like -20 degree wind chill outside some days, but I enjoy being bundled up.
Wanting: Come on, man, after all those movies do I really need to ask for anything else? But I told Santa I wanted an e-reader for the holidays. I miss reading, but I’m tired of lugging books back and forth across the country, being the gypsy that I am.

+ Liz

Listening: the Doors’re playing on the radio as I type this
Watching: “my stories” (aka Gossip Girl & Community)
Reading: I dunno. TELL ME THE BEST BOOK YOU READ THIS YEAR!
Wearing: black jeans + black boots + Aerosmith t-shirt + plaid flannel + this six-dollar fake-gold-chain necklace with a painted metal bird pendant that everyone loves the hell out of. Plus, the best side ponytail you ever saw.
Wanting: I think it’d be really great to be Alison Brie, ya know?

A few weeks back I did that Groupon thing where you pay $25 for a $50 gift certificate at American Apparel, and I got this tank top and this “nighty.” Both are adorable and mega-flattering. I also got these socks, which are cute too.

Listening:

Watching: My Dad is out of town this week, so I have been living at his apartment, AKA watching his TV. I don’t have a TV. I love TV. My favourite thing about TV is how often Friends is on. I think I watched five episodes of Friends last night? That’s so amazing. Friends is my favourite TV show ever. I AM IN LOVE WITH ROSS GELLER.
Reading: My new notebook

Listening: Well, “Desire Lines” by Deerhunter, obvs. And Suicidal Tendencies and Public Enemy and Iron Maiden and all the things I remember the skaters listened to when I was in eighth grade. It’s all perfect because I’m in a pretty aggro mood these days. And INXS’ Kick, which is a rilly, rilly great record.
Watching: Chungking Express, which is still so wistful and lovely after all these years. “Mad Men” and “Fringe.” Monsters Inc. I LOVE Monsters Inc.! And all the CNN coverage of the Chilean miners. Total bawlface.
Reading: I finished reading Me, the autobiography of Katharine Hepburn, and I enjoyed it muchly. Now, Kate, she was a real DAME. I’m proud she’s one of my namesakes. And anything about the Chilean miners.
Wearing: COMBAT BOOTS. And a old Martin Margiela sweater that is starting to seriously wear out.
Wanting: Ever since I met a dude who can talk astrology with me, I lack for nothing.

Suicidal! “You Can’t Bring Me Down”! This song definitely a contender for the most gratifying “fuck you!” in music.

+ Liz

Listening: Right now, “Summer Breeze” by Seals & Crofts. Usually, “Helen Wheels” by Wings.
Watching: Mad Men oh god why’s it ending so soon what are we gonna do????
Reading: our Lauren Cerand interview and this depresso thing about Evan Dando
Wearing: Lakers t-shirt with sleeves rolled up, my jeans that are black as a stack of black cats, cowboy boots, charm necklace, side braid, braided black satin headband (uniform variation)
Wanting: I want my new dress to get here now so I can wear it to the Hollywood Bowl tonight.

Laura and I watched this on the phone together last Sunday; it’s good:

Listening: As far as I’m concerned, only one song has ever been written, and that song is named “Michelle” by the Beatles. All “Michelle”, all the time. That’s just how I live.
Watching: On John Lennon’s 70th birthday, I stayed over at my Dad’s apartment and watched an episode of The Simpsons where it came out that Ned Flanders was secretly a Beatles memorabilia collector, and then Homer picked up all these bobblehead Beatles dolls and played around with them and said “Look at me! I’m Brian Epstein!”, and it was really cool to me.
Reading: I’m just going to start blatantly lying about what I’m “Reading:” from now on. This week, I read Macbeth and a biography of Davy Jones.
Wearing: The world’s shaggiest Bay City Rollers haircut; Chloe eau de parfum; metallic red Nehru-collared button up; cuffed blue jeans; mens grey 1980s Wall Streety overcoat; pastel knit beret; leopard print ballet flats
Wanting: 2nd or 8th Christopher Kane Resort dress:

(from Style Rookie that night I binge-read it)

Welcome To My Massive Girl Crush On Anna Torv

Being a big sci-fi nerd, I was a sporadic watcher of “Fringe” — because how could I resist a show about warring parallel worlds, an intelligent, super-capable but emotionally complicated lady FBI agent working for a covert division, and PACEY FROM “DAWSON’S CREEK”!!! I wasn’t too drawn in right away, but I kept dropping in because I thought Anna Torv was such a great, subtle actress who bore a bit of a resemblance to Cate Blanchett, playing a character that took a page out of the Agent Scully playbook but with a bit more melancholic edge. But man, something happened at the end of last season and the show has gotten so freakin’ good, like it finally found its footing. I had always thought Anna Torv as Agent Olivia Dunham was good, but my girl crush on her didn’t really activate till she discovered her doppelganger in “Fringe”‘s parallel world, who (bear with me) managed to switch places with “our” Olivia Dunham, trapping her in the parallel universe while taking her place and wreaking havoc in our world. As Alt-Olivia, Anna has a certain swagger and cockiness, not to mention red hair and a penchant for cool leather jackets that would make Cayce Pollard proud. That with her husky voice and DAMN SHE IS SO HOT. Go watch “Fringe”! Lots of action and smartness! AND PACEY FROM “DAWSON’S CREEK”!!

Pacey is all grown!

Listening: Karen Elson, The Ghost Who Walks, which I like quite a lot, actually — it’s a very sincere record; the new download from How to Destroy Angels; and Spoon’s Kill the Moonlight, which is like their version of a Fall record and that’s why I dig it so much.
Watching: Breathless; Up; episodes of “Fringe,” which I am digging because it’s PACEY! And also Anna Torv is awesome; and Monsters Inc., which I think is one of my favorite movies ever. CUTE ATTACK!!! Also, this hilarz video my friend sent me, it’s these dudes from 80s dating vids and oh my god, it’s a miracle people procreate sometimes!
Reading: I re-read The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton and I’m currently re-reading The House of Mirth as well before I give both copies away. Then I have to read Howards End again before I give that away. Moving is so stressful!!!!
Wearing: Dude, cropped sweatpants, Alternative Apparel t-shirt, Uniqlo hoodie — I am totes slobbed out.
Wanting: I WANT TO BE DONE WITH MOVING SOON. PLEASE.
Watch this and be amazed. Seriously:

+ Laura Jane
Listening: Marianne Faithfull, Broken English; Lil Wayne, Tha Carter III; The Beatles, “Dear Prudence”
Watching: Last night’s full moon, and some other moons
Reading: The Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers for the eighty billionth time
Wearing: Last night, after getting home from work, I realized I was accidentally wearing green American Apparel running shorts, a zebra-striped blouse-y thing, and then a red plaid flannel over the zebra stripes, and it looked SO COOL. I also have quite a killer tan
Wanting: SUMMER FOREVER
