Some Things I Love (And One Thing I Hate)

1. My friends Liz and Katie, who are getting married very soon and I really want you to vote for them in this Marriage Equality Wedding Giveaway contest thing deal. You know Katie; she’s DJ Freak Illness and she’s written for nogoodforme.com and for McSweeney’s. VOTE NOW AND FOREVER. We love you and you love love.

2. I’m going to see Sonic Youth and Wild Flag and Kurt Vile next Friday in Brooklyn, are you?

3. Wu-Tang Pizza; baby alpacas:

(Both via the Brite Futures Tumblr, which is a really good Tumblr. I’m going to tell you more about Brite Futures someday…in the brite future.)

4. Also from the Brite Futures Tumblr, Count Snoop:

5. The Hoot Hoot I Scream Hut, which doesn’t exist anymore. It was an L.A. ice cream shop run by a woman named Tillie Hattrup, and the owl’s head rotated and its eyes blinked. Actually a little terrifying.

6. This picture of Johnny Depp and Kate Moss, from Vintage Everyday. That’s a good look for Kate.

7. I’m going home to Massachusetts next week and I like to watch the Dom video for “Living in America” over and over cuz it was shot in my hometown and cuz it’s wild and dumb and beautiful. Dom has a new record coming out next week and I love the song “Some Boys” and there’s a review of the album in the Kurt Cobain issue of Spin, which stupidly identifies Dom as being from Dorchester. DOM ARE FROM WORCESTER. Dom are not from Dorchester. Fact-checking’s not that hard, Spin. Get it together. Also, your Nevermind nostalgia makes me want to shoot myself in the head. Soooooooooooooo totally trite.

8. Jersey Shore starts tonight, guys! I’ve missed Pauly so much. Hi Pauly.

A Beautiful Rock & Roll Video About My Hometown

This is a song about how it’s so sexy to be living in America, and it’s by Dom, who are my favorite band from the modern age. They’re also my favorite band from my hometown, and I’m soooooo happy there’s lots of cool Worcester shots in this video. The Ho Toy Luau! The dirty-movie theater downtown! That liquor store on Park Ave! Coney Island Hot Dogs! Also: girls taking their shirts off, and boys taking their pants off! A boy breakdancing in a ring of fire! Dom punching a dude in the face, and eating a lit cigarette. So many pretty flowers and colorful balloons and beautiful Christmas lights. This is my favorite video in the world. Now somebody buy me this t-shirt already:

Listening: All the Boris songs on the Limits of Control soundtrack. The bit of the Lady Gaga record where it sounds like Confessions on a Dance Floor and she sings about heavy metal. That’s pretty much my split musical personality right there.
Watching: Jarmusch! Jarmusch! Jarmusch! So much of it!
Reading: A Game of Thrones. I haven’t read it in YEARS and hearing everyone watch the show when I don’t have HBO is just killing my soul a little. Okay, not so much, but I still can’t wait to see it.
Wearing: Black skinny jeans, grey t-shirt and MY NEW GLASSES! I luff them.
Wanting: I’m pretty chill.

My new glasses and me!

+ Liz

Listening: new songs by Dom!
Watching: Gossip Girl starring David O. Russell
Reading: I wish I wouldn’t be quoting Russell Brand, if I were to fill in this field with the words “my booky wook.” So just pretend I’m not, okay? Here we go. Reading: my booky wook
Wearing: a Mickey Mouse t-shirt and skinny blue jeans and bare feet
Wanting: for you to listen to this Dom song, and other Dom songs:

“SOME BOYS” by DOM (featuring EMMA)

Listening: I’m on a Prince kick these days: Dirty Mind, Controversy, Sign ‘O’ The Times (such a genius record), Around the World in a Day (so underrated) and yeah of course Purple Rain because “Darling Nikki” still kind of makes me blush to this day.
Watching: Friends’ first cut of their brilliant movies. Also, the opening titles of Enter the Void. The rest of the movie is kind of dumb, but is Paz de la Huerta like the old-school Courtney Love of starlets? I think perhaps yes. I saw her boobs once in a NYC bar bathroom. But a lot of people have seen her boobs so that’s nothing special!
Reading: Mine and others’ drafts of stories and novels. “Critique and feedback” is my middle name these days! Also, am starting Lonely Werewolf Girl by Martin Millar on the plane tomorrow, on the recommendation (so long ago) of the lovely Lauren Cerand.
Wearing: I am still in my PJs now. I get up at 6AM to start working, it’s radically altered my fashion commitments and I do not like it. But to force myself to get dressed so early feels so wrong.
Wanting: For my flight tomorrow to be peaceful and no screaming babies onboard so I can sleep. I RETURN TO MY SPIRITUAL HOME, at least for a few days.

“Enter the Void”…COUNT ALL THE TYPEFACES AT THE END!

Listening: “Burn Bridges” by Dom, over and over and over – it’s the song of my moving out of the house I’ve lived in for the last six years. I saw Dom last Saturday and they did the dopest cover of “Little Red Corvette.”
Watching: While packing, I have watched the following: Mermaids, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Grosse Pointe Blank, Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban, L.A. Story, and 17 episodes of Sex & The City. SEVENTEEN.
Reading: Cavedweller by Dorothy Allison
Wearing: as little as possible, it’s wicked hot out
Wanting: to eat all the food in the world. Packing-related stress eating = SRS BIZNIS

+ Laura Jane

Listening: David Bowie, “Oh! You Pretty Things”
Watching: David Bowie videos on Youtube
Reading: I was thinking of reading Nicholas Nickleby
Wearing: Just a bunch of ugly crap that I hate, but here is what I wish I was wearing: leopard-print track shorts, rainbow-striped platform wedge sandals, and a Keith Richards t-shirt. That’s what I want my summer fashion concept to be.
Wanting: I move in to my new apartment tomorrow so I guess I want it to be tomorrow! That’s so easy and it’s totally going to come true!

Listening: The new Strokes record; old Pixies records. I prefer the Pixies.
Watching: FOX RENEWED “FRINGE”! So I am watching that tonight.
Reading: I started Blake Nelson’s Recovery Road and I LIKE IT A LOT.
Wearing: I am still in my PJs; I’ve been up since 5:30AM.
Wanting: I want you to read my new short story! It is like a slight satire on “Sex and the City”-style chick lit, but someone so eternal that it borders on cliche wandered into it. According to Figment, it should take approximately 13 minutes to read. Below would be the cover image, if it was a book:

+ Liz

Listening: All I do is listen to “How You Like Me Now?” by the Heavy and pretend I’m walkin’ all around town with my big brother Christian Bale in the midst of a gloriously sunny Massachusetts morn.
Watching: Friends With Money; I’m on a Nicole Holofcener kick. Jennifer Aniston’s delivery of the line “I love Old Navy!” is probably my favorite moment in all of cinematic history.
Reading: rereading Cavedweller by Dorothy Allison
Wearing: black jeans + white tshirt + faux leopard fur coat + black Frye boots + BIG HAIR
Wanting: I’m going to see Dom tomorrow and I want you to come see them too!

Drag about Mad Men, huh?

+ Laura Jane

Listening: All night every night I stay up all night working and listening to Space Oddity by David Bowie over and over again. Sometimes also Village Green, and the Wu-Tang/Beatles mash-up, which truly is a gift from God
Watching: God that bitch named Alexandria from Top Model truly is a giant bitch, isn’t she?
Reading:
Wearing: Last night I realized my Midnight Marauders t-shirt is glow-in-the-dark! So next time I am sad or grumpy or having an emotional breakdown, just remind me that I own a glow-in-the-dark Midnight Marauders t-shirt, and maybe I will care. It’s hard not to typo “Marauders” as “Mauraders,” which I think is a side effect of having the name “Laura”
Wanting: Jersey Shore & daylong nap

In the future, when people ask me what’s my favourite David Bowie song, I’ll tell them “Cygnet Committee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Snapshot: Listening, Watching, Reading, Wearing, Wanting

+ Kat

Listening: Lykke Li, La Sera, Iron Maiden.
Watching: I’m totally going to see Jane Eyre and Red Riding Hood. It’s a sweeping-across-the-landscape-in-dramatic-costumes weekend. Plus: werewolves, of course. Rochester’s kind of like a spiritual werewolf, right?
Reading: I finally finished that Paul Haggis. vs. the Church of Scientology article in the New Yorker and WHOA THAT WAS PRETTY EPIC. Also finished The Stand and then had a crazy dream about nuclear apocalypse.
Wearing: The winter-into-spring transition is always really confusing. I have a Lyell blouse under this crazy shaggy cardigan, with jeans and riding boots.
Wanting: If it is truly going to be 50 degrees tomorrow, then I AM GOING TO RIDE AN ARABIAN HORSE NAMED ALLIE!

This is sort of what Allie looks like. Next to Icelandic horses, who get the distinction of being the most adorable horses in the world, I love the expressions on Arabians’ faces, they are a particularly knowing and intelligent breed.

+ Liz

Listening: Dom! And the Wild Flag cover of “Ask the Angels” by the Patti Smith Group.
Watching: I saw that movie with Liam Neeson and Betty Draper like two weeks ago or something, I think.
Reading: the New York interview with Bernie Madoff (just can’t get enuf)
Wearing: Oh last night at Target I bought the cutest dress for five bucks!
Wanting: a copy of the January issue of Playboy, so I can read “Notes on Jersey Shore” by Bret Easton Ellis

Speaking of Bret Easton Ellis, here is a photo of my copy of Less Than Zero, which I’ve had since 1990. The cover got trashed in a snowball fight:

+ Laura Jane

Listening: White Noise, An Electric Storm
Watching: Like a billion episodes of Friends from the season where Rachel first gets pregnant with Emma. Last night was when Joey starts to develop feelings for Rachel. I really like that plotline, although it means that Aisha Tyler as Charlie is lurking just around the corner and I can’t really deal with that. It’s hard for me to watch Ross Geller date anyone who isn’t Rachel Green or myself.
Reading: This short story John Lennon wrote about me:

It’s about my death.
Wearing: Nothing good, that’s for sure!
Wanting: Bro time with my bro, this guy

Don’t You Love It When Scrappy Longhaired Skater Dudes Sing Sunshiney Party Songs About Their Cats?

I know I do! My new favorite band is Dom; they’re from my hometown. All I’ve listened to for the past few days is their record Sun Bronzed Greek Gods, especially “Bochicha,” the one about the cat:

DOM, “BOCHICHA”

The singer for Dom is a boy named Dom. He reminds me of Kurt Cobain, Axl Rose, a Treasure Troll doll with rainbow hair, Venice Beach, Charliebro’s Tumblr, the glow-in-the-dark rollerskating rink in Glendale, Mika Miko’s video for “I Got A Lot (New New New),” the adorable feral cats that lived in my parking lot when I first moved to L.A., and that weird bubblegum with crunchy crystals in the center that they used to make in the 1980s.

My second favorite song on Sun Bronzed Greek Gods is “Living in America,” which they just remixed with Gucci Mane. The chorus goes “It’s so sexy to be living in America,” and I sooooooo agree. Here’s the original version:

DOM, “LIVING IN AMERICA”

ABC News did a story on Dom a little while back and I’ve watched the following clip way more times than anyone should ever watch a YouTube video of an ABC News segment. I dig all the shots of my hometown and I’m stoked that they included Sexy Lady’s Family Market, but the best is when the boys shoot off fireworks in the snow and when Dom talks about wanting to be Roy Orbison. The part where he plays piano is so pretty. I also love how he’s never without his cell phone.

Anyway, you should definitely Facebook-like Dom, as they often post videos by artists like the Spice Girls and Juliana Hatfield and it’s so delightful. They’re on tour now; go see them. And buy all their mp3s. Buy them this instant!
