On Wednesday morning I was granted the opportunity to have a message delivered from me to Mickey Rourke, which is something I’m not going to elaborate on here. I tried to come up with something clever but in the end I went with: “Tell Mickey I just saw Homeboy and I loved it and I love him.” It was a good choice. And last night I was listening to all the Bruce Springsteen songs on my iPod and I realized another good choice would have been: “Tell Mickey if he were a song, he’d totally be ‘It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City’ by Bruce Springsteen.” It’s so true! And I listened to “It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City” like five times in a row, and then I listened to David Bowie’s version, which is lustrous and elegant, as David Bowie songs are wont to be. But it’s not about Mickey Rourke. Only Bruce’s is for Mickey:
Go here and get “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (6/11/11) – Cinespia Set Pt. 2.” It’s an mp3 of the last 19-something minutes of DJ Carlos Niño’s set from the Hollywood Forever screening of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre last Saturday; it’s got “Sexy Sadie” by The Beatles and “See Emily Play” by Pink Floyd and some version of “Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right” that I can’t identify. I think the first song is by Neu!, but maybe it’s not (in which case, totally disregard the mention of krautrock in the headline for this post). And I thought it also had “Memory of Free Festival” by David Bowie, which is why I picked that David pic, but apparently that’s on part one. So download part one, too! Everything’s really beautiful. I can’t wait till I’m done with the hellish workday and can finally retire to my bedroom with a Thai Tea popsicle and burn some Nag Champa incense and play parts one and two and just vibe out.
P.S. At the screening there was a Q & A with Werner Herzog afterward and at one point he told us, “My wife is here and she will testify that I am a fluffy husband.” Adorbs!!
I think about the Sunset Strip in the 1970s multiple times weekly, but until now I’d never thought about the billboards. What an oversight. They’re so damn good-looking.
I think these all came from sandiego1978, which is a really good Tumblr. A funny thing about this post is I learned that I am incapable of not typo-ing “Odds and Sods” as “Odds and Soda.” Also, it was nice to be reminded that there was once a place called Filthy McNasty’s.
Listening: I’m on a Prince kick these days: Dirty Mind, Controversy, Sign ‘O’ The Times (such a genius record), Around the World in a Day (so underrated) and yeah of course Purple Rain because “Darling Nikki” still kind of makes me blush to this day. Watching: Friends’ first cut of their brilliant movies. Also, the opening titles of Enter the Void. The rest of the movie is kind of dumb, but is Paz de la Huerta like the old-school Courtney Love of starlets? I think perhaps yes. I saw her boobs once in a NYC bar bathroom. But a lot of people have seen her boobs so that’s nothing special! Reading: Mine and others’ drafts of stories and novels. “Critique and feedback” is my middle name these days! Also, am starting Lonely Werewolf Girl by Martin Millar on the plane tomorrow, on the recommendation (so long ago) of the lovely Lauren Cerand. Wearing: I am still in my PJs now. I get up at 6AM to start working, it’s radically altered my fashion commitments and I do not like it. But to force myself to get dressed so early feels so wrong. Wanting: For my flight tomorrow to be peaceful and no screaming babies onboard so I can sleep. I RETURN TO MY SPIRITUAL HOME, at least for a few days.
“Enter the Void”…COUNT ALL THE TYPEFACES AT THE END!

Listening:“Burn Bridges” by Dom, over and over and over – it’s the song of my moving out of the house I’ve lived in for the last six years. I saw Dom last Saturday and they did the dopest cover of “Little Red Corvette.” Watching: While packing, I have watched the following: Mermaids, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Grosse Pointe Blank, Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban, L.A. Story, and 17 episodes of Sex & The City. SEVENTEEN. Reading:Cavedweller by Dorothy Allison Wearing: as little as possible, it’s wicked hot out Wanting: to eat all the food in the world. Packing-related stress eating = SRS BIZNIS
+ Laura Jane
Listening: David Bowie, “Oh! You Pretty Things” Watching: David Bowie videos on Youtube Reading: I was thinking of reading Nicholas Nickleby Wearing: Just a bunch of ugly crap that I hate, but here is what I wish I was wearing: leopard-print track shorts, rainbow-striped platform wedge sandals, and a Keith Richards t-shirt. That’s what I want my summer fashion concept to be. Wanting: I move in to my new apartment tomorrow so I guess I want it to be tomorrow! That’s so easy and it’s totally going to come true!
Listening: The new Strokes record; old Pixies records. I prefer the Pixies. Watching: FOX RENEWED “FRINGE”! So I am watching that tonight. Reading: I started Blake Nelson’s Recovery Road and I LIKE IT A LOT. Wearing: I am still in my PJs; I’ve been up since 5:30AM. Wanting: I want you to read my new short story! It is like a slight satire on “Sex and the City”-style chick lit, but someone so eternal that it borders on cliche wandered into it. According to Figment, it should take approximately 13 minutes to read. Below would be the cover image, if it was a book:

Listening: All I do is listen to “How You Like Me Now?” by the Heavy and pretend I’m walkin’ all around town with my big brother Christian Bale in the midst of a gloriously sunny Massachusetts morn. Watching:Friends With Money; I’m on a Nicole Holofcener kick. Jennifer Aniston’s delivery of the line “I love Old Navy!” is probably my favorite moment in all of cinematic history. Reading: rereading Cavedweller by Dorothy Allison Wearing: black jeans + white tshirt + faux leopard fur coat + black Frye boots + BIG HAIR Wanting: I’m going to see Dom tomorrow and I want you to come see them too!
Listening: All night every night I stay up all night working and listening to Space Oddity by David Bowie over and over again. Sometimes also Village Green, and the Wu-Tang/Beatles mash-up, which truly is a gift from God Watching: God that bitch named Alexandria from Top Model truly is a giant bitch, isn’t she? Reading: Wearing: Last night I realized my Midnight Marauders t-shirt is glow-in-the-dark! So next time I am sad or grumpy or having an emotional breakdown, just remind me that I own a glow-in-the-dark Midnight Marauders t-shirt, and maybe I will care. It’s hard not to typo “Marauders” as “Mauraders,” which I think is a side effect of having the name “Laura” Wanting: Jersey Shore & daylong nap
In the future, when people ask me what’s my favourite David Bowie song, I’ll tell them “Cygnet Committee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Imagine if 1973 David Bowie joined the 1964 Beatles? Here is what his shoes would look like.
You know who else would look really stellar (or should I say interstellar?!? MALIBOOYAH!) in David Bowie’s Beatle boots? Me! Laura Jane Faulds circa September 2010. So, if you happen to have $895 to spare on buying me the #1 pair of David Bowie-ey Beatle boots of all time I’ve ever wanted in my life, I just wanted to let you know that you are entirely welcome to go ahead and do so. Wham Bam Thank You Ma’am Yeah Yeah Yeah.
