Here are some photos from my “Penny Lane” zine, which is an excerpt from Let It Be Beautiful (the Beatlesy book I’m writing with Laura Jane Faulds). “Penny Lane” is about the Los Angeles neighborhood in which I’ve lived for the past eight years, and all the weird and lovely people I’ve met there. There’s a lot about boys: boys who drink wine from measuring cups and mason jars, boys with cool scars and cool dogs and licorice rolling papers, boys with guns and tattooed skulls, boys with imaginary books that they stole from Wes Anderson after getting locked in a bedroom with Gwyneth Paltrow. I don’t reveal any of the boys’ names in “Penny Lane,” but I’ll tell you here that their names are Andy, Chad, Jason, Steve, Matt, and two other ones I don’t feel like identifying. My favorite parts are when I self-identify as “one of those girls who never got over Jim Morrison,” the line about the perfume that smells like trees on fire and cream puffs, and everything about Andy.
