1. What grains of sand look like under a microscope

One of my Facebook chums posted this Daily Mail story about what grains of sand look like when magnified to over 250 times their actual size. The pictures come from SandGrains.com. My fave’s that fried-eggy one.
2. The “White Moon” scene from Under Great White Northern Lights
I often forget that my two main characters’ hair and dynamic were totally ripped off from this scene. Remembering always makes me feel all fuzzy in the heart. (And ohhhh, Meg’s hand on Jack’s hand at the end…sigh.)
3. Mick Jagger’s can of Pepsi

And his face, and hair.
4. The “Bitter Sweet Symphony” video
God! I hadn’t seen it in so long, and then it came on VH1 Classic when I was flying back to L.A. a couple weeks ago. I wish I could push everybody around when I’m walking around Echo Park; that would be so cathartic.
5. The Spice Table
It’s in Little Tokyo; go there tonight. The other night I ate a pig’s tail while wearing pigtails. I also ate a lamb’s heart.
6. Our Idiot Brother

Such a sweet movie, guys! You’ll love the part about the candles. Plus there’s a scene where the whole family’s sitting around the table and there’s this really beautiful cake I can’t stop thinking about: one of the greatest examples of “movie food” since the egg sandwich from Spanglish, which Laura Jane Faulds and I just voted “the best movie sandwich evs.”
7. Cheeseburger Vans

JP found these; we both wish they had them in grown-up size. (Oh hey can you tell I’m wicked hungry?)
8. I’m going to see No Age on Saturday
It’s my first No Agers show since they opened for Sonic Youth and Pavement at the Hollywood Bowl last fall. Apart from “Bitter Sweet Symphony” and the Andrew Oldham Orchestra’s version of “The Last Time” by the Rolling Stones, this is my number-one jam right now:

I suddenly feel compelled to collect sand.
Maybe if we start a petition and send it to Vans, they’ll make shoes in our sizes.
Oh my god, that sand! And oh my god, the Verve is on VH1 CLASSIC? I will never get used to my high school music being deemed “classic.” (I still love that song, too.)
