On Tuesday I finished a draft of “Penny Lane” for Let It Be Beautiful, which is the Beatles book I’m writing with Laura Jane Faulds. “Penny Lane” is about the neighborhood I’ve lived in for the past seven years and seven months, a section of Los Angeles called “Echo Park.” It’s a sweet little story, with lots of sentences about flowers and fruit and dogs and kissing; you could maybe even call it a valentine. And then today my friend (and birthday girl!) Gina posted this video on Facebook and at first I was like “FUCK YOU, ECHO PARK, YOU GET NO VALENTINES FROM ME!!” and I shook my fist and spat and hated Echo Park and wished for it to implode or spontaneously combust or something else cool like that.
But that’s dumb and boring thinking. Echo Park still gets my Valentines. But those creeps don’t get my Penny Lane.

(Echo Park, back in the day, borrowed from this really neat website)
P.S. STOP BEING SO HUMBLE, PAUL MCCARTNEY!!!! Why you always gotta be so humble?

Half of that video seems like a parody, but half does not. It’s a pleasing sort of confusion.
that video makes me feel all kinds of things, many of them decidedly unbeautiful! but it also made me laugh, so there you go. there’s got to be some performance art/satire happening in it, i just can’t tell where.
one of my favorite dudes lived in echo park like ten years ago and i liked it a lot. but that was ten years ago and i haven’t been back since
xo k.
come back to echo park! although, in the words of meg march, you will find her much altered. but i’ll buy you tacos!
I’m not even gonna click on that video… but… that paul pic!
