I mean, the song’s not about *about* Point Break, but it quotes that Point Break scene everybody always quotes, the one about corpses inching along the freeway in metal coffins and about how the human spirit’s still alive. And it steals a much more obscure and totally underrated bit of Point Break dialogue, that line where Bodhi says “She was my woman! We shared time together!” So romantic, Bodhi! So romantic. Now thanks to “Surfin’ Coffin” by Japanther I walk down the street all the time sing-song-ing those words in the rhythm of some bubblegum-Misfits drumbeat, and it’s like summertime in wintertime, like surfing all day on the sunniest Saturday and then hitting up Coldstone for a bucket of Birthday Cake Remix and afterward you go drink tall boys of Tecate on the beach with your bros and everything’s cool, everything’s epic.
Out today, Rock ‘n’ Roll Ice Cream kind of all sounds like surfing + Birthday Cake Remix + Tecate tall boys + bros – or, to quote Matt Japanther himself in that mega-cute vid below – “it’s like if you had a pizza party with all your best friends and then after the pizza party you ate ice cream but there was no guilt whatsoever involved.” Yes! So, buy the record right now, and go see Japanther next time they’re in your city, which might be very very soon! Their shows are always a gas and the funnest dance party evs, and the only reason I don’t regret going to last year’s TOTAL BUST of a Fuck Yeah Fest was getting to see Japanther play with Ninjasonik. Make it happen, homes. Vaya con dios.
